A small 18th century black salt glazed stoneware Bellarmine jug with bearded man signature on the neck and a flower stamped to the body.
These jugs were also known as 'Bartmann jug' meaning bearded man which is the makers signature appearing on the necks of the vessels. The bearded face is said to signify a mythical man creature from European folklore of the 14th century. These vessels were typically used for storage and transportation of food and drink.
